TRA Police Award Recipient John Moynihan Wins Boston International Masters Boxing Title

Just months after receiving the Theodore Roosevelt Association Police Award, Boston Police Detective John Moynihan added another remarkable achievement to his story of perseverance, winning the title at the Boston International Masters Tournament at Sonny’s Boxing Arena.
Facing a younger and bigger opponent, Moynihan battled through the entire bout, never gave up, and earned the victory by decision—a fitting display of the resilience that earned him the Theodore Roosevelt Police Award earlier this year.
“I know Teddy was a boxer, so trying to live up to the honor that was bestowed upon me,” said Detective Moynihan.
On May 3rd, the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) presented Moynihan with the award during the Boston Police Relief Association’s 154th Annual Ball and Awards Ceremony. Established in 1983, the award recognizes law enforcement officers who return to active duty after overcoming serious illness and/or injury and continue to provide outstanding service.
A former U.S. Army Ranger who deployed to Iraq, Moynihan joined the Boston Police Department in 2009. In 2013, he responded during the manhunt following the Boston Marathon bombing, advancing toward active gunfire and helping provide life-saving aid to critically wounded MBTA Police Officer Richard Donohue.
In 2015, Moynihan was shot at point-blank range in the face while on proactive patrol, suffering severe injuries. Despite an arduous recovery, he returned to duty and continued his law enforcement career.
More than a decade later, that same determination was on display in the boxing ring.
“John continues to show us exactly why he was selected to receive the Theodore Roosevelt Police Award,” said TRA Executive Director Chris Cosentino. “He faced a younger, bigger opponent, never gave up, and won. His perseverance embodies President Theodore Roosevelt’s belief in living the strenuous life.”
