Theodore Roosevelt Association Celebrates Conservation Legacy with 2026 Birding with Theodore Roosev

New York, NY - The Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) hosted its 2026 Birding with Theodore Roosevelt event on Monday, April 14th on a beautiful day in New York City. Organized by TRA Trustee Michael Sacopulos, the day offered participants a rare blend of history, science, and outdoor exploration inspired by Theodore Roosevelt’s conservation legacy.

The celebration began with an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour of the American Museum of Natural History’s world-renowned bird skin collection. Attendees had the opportunity to view remarkable specimens, including several originally collected and prepared by TR himself - a testament to his early work as a naturalist and his enduring influence on American ornithology.

The day continued with a birding walk through Central Park, led by Dr. Robert “Birding Bob” DeCandido, one of New York City’s most celebrated birding experts.
“We were thrilled to see TRA members and friends come together to celebrate Theodore Roosevelt’s love of birds,” said Michael Sacopulos. “This event not only connects us to his scientific curiosity but also reminds us of TR’s lasting legacy of conservation.”

Mike Sacopulos and the TRA Public Historian Mike Cullinane are currently completing a book about TR and birding. They expect it to be published in 2027 by Lyons Press. The illustrations for the book will be unique drawing by famed birder Kenn Kaufman.

The Theodore Roosevelt Association extends its heartfelt thanks to all who joined in this special day, honoring Theodore Roosevelt’s enduring spirit of wonder, exploration, and stewardship of the natural world.
