What was Theodore Roosevelt's height and weight?

Webmaster's note: We've been surprised at how many people ask how tall was Theodore Roosevelt and what did he weigh? Now you will know!

People think of Teddy Roosevelt as being larger than life. Many thought of him as a very tall man because of his "big" personality.

TR was about 5'8", average height for a man of his day (some people have said as tall as 5'10" but the consensus remains at 5'8").

His weight varied greatly over the years. When he was younger, he was very thin due to childhood illness. He expanded his chest and developed a lot of muscle while he was a rancher in North Dakota, 1884-1886. He remained powerfully built for the rest of his life.

However, during the later years of his presidency, he did tend to put on weight around his middle, at one point going up to over 200 pounds. He lost 55 pounds on his trip down the "River of Doubt" in 1914. It is difficult to give an accurate weight since it varied so drastically over the years.

There is one time for which we do know TR's weight. According to Nathan Miller in Theodore Roosevelt: A Life (page 29), TR weighed eight and a half pounds at birth.
