United Spanish War Veterans - Uniform

In 1898 General Irving Hale of Colorado founded the United Spanish War Veterans organization (USWV). As with the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) for Civil War veterans, each year the USWV held annual reunions. By the 1950s, the USWV still had over 3,000 members in 600 local chapters throughout the U.S. The last survivor was Jones Morgan a black cavalryman who died August 29th, 1993 at 110. Morgan was a cook and horse wrangler in the 10th U.S. Cavalry and tended horses for the Rough Riders.

RIGHT - USWV Membership Badges: One first model membership badge with a ribbon similar to the GAR membership badge.

Cavarly U.S.V.W. Uniform and Hat:

This is a five button veteran’s uniform with four pockets made of dark blue cloth and USWV embroidered bullion on the collar. The tunic has yellow cavalry epaulets and the pants have a yellow stripe down the seam. The buttons are the entire standard USWV pattern. The hat is the standard USVW hat with USVW hat wreath on the front and some minor moth nips on the top. First Rough Rider
