Even Theodore Roosevelt, who became a very famous President of the United States, was a child once. His family had quite a bit of money, but life was still sometimes difficult for young Theodore, or Teedie as his family called him. He had very severe asthma. There were no inhalers or special medicines and treatments for asthma as there are now. He was often sick and generally very weak as a young boy. Fortunately on the advice of a wise doctor, his father suggested that Theodore exercise his body along with his mind. His father installed a primitive "home gym" for young Teedie. As a result of his father's inspiration, Teedie vowed to "make his body". And he did. He still suffered some asthma attacks. But those attacks were much less frequent and he became quite strong and athletic. When he grew up, among many other things, Theodore Roosevelt was the loving father of six children. He spent a great deal of time with them. He was one of their favorite playmates. Theodore Roosevelt thought much about future generations of children. That is one of the reasons he became such a champion of conservation and saving special places that are now National Parks and Monuments. Watch this page for more stories! |
