Announces Theodore Roosevelt License Plates
Oyster Bay -
Motor Vehicle Commissioner Raymond P. Martinez today announced
the availability of customized New York State license plates commemorating
the 143rd anniversary of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt's birth.
The distinctive new plates were made possible through a grant
from Island Properties, LLC in cooperation with the Theodore Roosevelt
Association.
"Theodore Roosevelt's
accomplishments as U.S. president and governor of New York State
at the turn of the 20th Century have been well documented and
his legacy lives on some 143 years after his birth," said Governor
George E. Pataki. "His work on the environment is especially noteworthy
and for those reasons he is one of my heroes. I compliment the
Theodore Roosevelt Association and the citizens of Oyster Bay
for keeping alive the memory of one of our truly great presidents
and public officials."
The new multi-color
license plates features a picture of Theodore Roosevelt with the
initials TR on the left side, followed by up to six numbers and
letters with the legend "Oyster Bay" across the bottom. The plates
may be ordered at any DMV issuing office, via the Internet at
www.nysdmv.com, or by calling 1-800-364-PLATES. For more information,
please visit either theodoreroosevelt.org or islandpropertiesllc.com.
Oyster Bay residents
have a special place in their hearts for the 26th president of
the United States, who lived, worked and raised a family at Sagamore
Hill, once known as the "summer White House" and now a National
Historic Site. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the start
of his presidency in 1901. It is also the year in which the famed
"Rough Rider" was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for
his valor in Cuba during the Spanish-American War of 1898. The
Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military decoration, was
presented to the Roosevelt family last January in the Roosevelt
Room of the White House.
The commemorative plate
was proposed by an Oyster Bay resident, Mike Rich, who worked
with Island Properties and the Theodore Roosevelt Association
to develop the plates.
"The license plates
are a splendid and imaginative way to show your pride in Oyster
Bay's favorite son and Long Island's President," said Dr. John
A. Gable, Executive Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Association.
"We want to thank Mike Rich for originating this project, and
Island Properties in Oyster Bay for providing funding and staff
necessary to put this together!"
Roosevelt's achievements
as President, Governor of New York, Police Commissioner of New
York City, Rough Rider, winner of both the Medal of Honor and
the Nobel Peace Prize, conservationist, champion of the "strenuous
life" and the "square deal," have truly made him an American icon.
